Play Catan Seafarers Online Free: The Complete Guide

Set Sail on the Island of Catan
If the base game is about settling one island, Seafarers is about discovering a whole archipelago. It adds ships, open ocean, and the thrill of exploring and colonizing new islands — and it is one of the most beloved ways to change up Catan. Best of all, you can play it online for free instead of buying and setting up the physical expansion.

What Seafarers Adds
Seafarers keeps the core of Catan intact and layers new systems on top:
- Ocean hexes you can build across.
- Ships, a second kind of connector alongside roads.
- New islands to explore and settle, often for bonus points.
- Gold fields that pay out any resource you choose.
- Scenario maps with their own goals and layouts.
Ships and Shipping Routes
A ship costs one lumber and one wool. Where roads run along land edges, ships run along sea edges, and together they form your transport network. You start a shipping route from a coastal settlement and extend it out across the water, hex by hex, toward open sea and distant islands.
One clever wrinkle: the open end of a shipping route can be moved. Until a route connects two settlements (at which point it is "closed"), you can pick up your outermost ship and relocate it — handy for redirecting toward a better island or racing a rival to a landing spot.
Longest Trade Route
In Seafarers, the classic Longest Road bonus becomes the Longest Trade Route, and it counts roads and ships together. That means a coastal, ship-heavy strategy can grab those 2 victory points just as easily as a land-based road network.
Exploring and Settling New Islands
The heart of Seafarers is expansion across the sea. In many scenarios the outer islands start face-down and are revealed as your ships reach them, and settling a new island is rewarded with bonus victory points. This creates a genuine race: everyone wants to be first to the good landing spots, and the player who commits to shipbuilding early can stake out territory nobody else can reach.
Gold Fields
Some hexes are gold fields. When a gold field’s number is rolled, each adjacent settlement earns you your pick of any resource (a city earns two). Gold is the great equalizer — a settlement on a gold field never leaves you short of exactly the resource you need, which makes those spots extremely valuable.
The Pirate
Several scenarios add a pirate ship — the robber’s seafaring cousin. The pirate sits on ocean hexes, blocks ships from being built next to it, and lets you steal from players with adjacent boats. Between the robber on land and the pirate at sea, there is always a way to pressure the leader.
A Few Strategy Tips
- Commit to the sea or the land early. Half-measures leave you slow on both. If a scenario is island-heavy, invest in ships and lumber/wool.
- Gold fields are premium. Treat a good number on a gold field like a red-number resource hex — grab it in setup.
- Race for new islands. The bonus points for first settlements on outer islands are often the margin of victory.
- Remember the trade route counts ships. Do not concede Longest Trade Route just because you went coastal.
